Somlo
Mount Somló is a distinctive witness hill of volcanic origin in Veszprém County, rising isolated from the surrounding Pannonian plain. Reaching an elevation of 431 meters, the mountain is famous for its basalt-capped plateau formed by ancient volcanic activity. The region is internationally renowned for its unique wines, particularly the Juhfark variety, which was historically prized at European royal courts as the 'Wine of Wedding Nights'. The slopes are dotted with traditional small wine cellars and historic chapels, such as those dedicated to Saint Margaret and Saint Stephen. On the northern crest, the ruins of Somló Castle, dating back to the 14th century, offer a glimpse into the area's medieval defensive history. Spectacular basalt columns, known as 'basalt organs', characterize the steep cliffs and showcase the cooling process of ancient lava flows. Today, Somló is part of the Balaton Uplands National Park and serves as a popular destination for hikers and wine enthusiasts alike.
