Ajka is a prominent industrial city in Veszprém County, situated in the western foothills of the Bakony Mountains within the Torna Creek valley. The settlement's rapid growth began after the discovery of brown coal deposits in 1865, which established a robust mining culture in the region. Another significant milestone was the founding of the world-famous glass factory by Bernard Neumann in 1878, making Ajka Crystal a globally recognized brand. During the 20th century, the city evolved into a major center for aluminum production, though it gained international notoriety in 2010 following a tragic red mud environmental disaster. Today, Ajka features a modernized urban landscape and a diversified economy, while the Mining Museum preserves its industrial heritage. Geographically, it lies along the Budapest-Graz railway line and serves as a key gateway to the Bakony-Balaton Geopark.
