Veszprem Zoo (Hungary)

Weather…

The Veszprém Zoo, officially known as the Kittenberger Kálmán Zoo and Botanical Garden, is one of Hungary's oldest and most beautifully situated zoos, located in the scenic Fejes Valley and on Gulya Hill. Opened in 1958, it was constructed in a record time of just five months through the dedicated volunteer work of local citizens. Named after the famous Hungarian African explorer Kálmán Kittenberger, the zoo places a strong emphasis on species conservation and providing naturalistic habitats. One of its main attractions is the expansive African Savanna enclosure, which spans over 5 hectares and hosts giraffes, zebras, and rhinoceroses together. Another highlight is the Elephant Park, inaugurated in 2014, which provides a modern home for Asian elephants according to the highest standards. In addition to exotic animals, the zoo features a Dino Park with life-sized models and an extensive adventure playground for children. Through continuous developments, Veszprém Zoo has become one of Transdanubia's most visited tourist destinations, successfully merging education with recreation.

From April to October most animals are active in outdoor enclosures, and the Dino Park area is open. In winter, some tropical houses and indoor sections remain accessible, though outdoor areas are limited.
🌅
Best time of day
Morning feeding times (around 10 AM) are particularly popular as animals are active then. Afternoons are quieter but animals often rest - arriving early is recommended.
📜
Etiquette
Do not feed animals with outside food - only zoo-provided feed is allowed. Keep a safe distance from enclosures and do not climb on fences or barriers.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable footwear is essential as the grounds are spacious and include gentle slopes. Binoculars can help view animals in the large savanna enclosures from a distance.
