💡 Tips

  • Start hikes early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and the afternoon thunderstorms common on the mountain.
  • Even in summer, bring a warm layer; temperatures drop significantly as you ascend Mount Olympus or sit near the Enipeas gorge at night.
  • Visit the Information Center of Olympus National Park for up-to-date trail conditions and excellent exhibits on local flora and fauna.
  • Parking in the narrow streets of Litochoro can be tight; use the larger parking areas near the municipal park or on the outskirts.

Litochoro lies on the eastern slopes of Mount Olympus, just a few kilometers from the Aegean Sea. The town combines an alpine atmosphere with Mediterranean flair and serves as the primary gateway for hikes to the peak of Mytikas (2918 m). A highlight is the Enipeas Gorge, which begins right at the edge of town and leads to the "Baths of Zeus", natural rock pools. The town's architecture follows traditional Macedonian styles, featuring cobbled alleys and small squares. Litochoro features excellent tourist facilities, including mountaineering shops, cozy taverns, and modern hotels. Only 5 kilometers away is the archaeological site of Dion, the sacred city of the Macedonians, where temples dedicated to Zeus and Isis can be visited. Mount Olympus National Park was Greece's first (established in 1938) and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The flora includes over 1,700 plant species, many of which are endemic. Climbing to the summit typically takes two days, with an overnight stay in a mountain refuge like "Refuge A" at 2,100 meters. The best time for mountaineering is from June to September.
