Royal Tombs of Vergina (Greece)

Weather…

Vergina, the site of ancient Aigai, was the first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia and is home to one of the most spectacular archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. In 1977, archaeologist Manolis Andronikos unearthed the intact royal tombs of the Macedonian dynasty beneath a massive earth mound known as the Great Tumulus. The most significant of these is the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, which contained priceless treasures of gold, silver, and ivory. The modern museum is ingeniously built inside the tumulus itself to protect the tombs in their original positions while creating an atmospheric subterranean experience. Key exhibits include the solid gold larnax featuring the Sun of Vergina and the king's exquisite golden oak leaf wreath. Beyond the tombs, the site includes the ruins of a monumental palace and the theater where Philip II was assassinated in 336 BC. Since 1996, Vergina has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, providing vital evidence of the wealth and artistic sophistication of the Macedonian court.
