Fort St. Jago (Ghana)

Weather…

Fort St. Jago, also known as Fort Coenraadsburg, is situated on a hill opposite Elmina Castle and is one of the oldest military buildings on the Gold Coast. It was built by the Dutch in the 1660s after they recognized the hill's strategic value during their capture of Elmina in 1637. The fort served primarily to protect the main Elmina Castle from attacks from the hinterland and to prevent enemy forces from using the hill as a vantage point to fire cannons at the castle. Unlike many other coastal forts, Fort St. Jago was never used for the slave trade, serving purely military purposes throughout its history. From its walls, it has an excellent view of Elmina town and the Atlantic Ocean. The fort's architecture is well-preserved and exemplifies the robust 17th-century Dutch military design. Today, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list and stands as a significant monument to European colonial history in Ghana.
