Elmina Castle, formally known as São Jorge da Mina, is the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara, erected by the Portuguese in 1482. In 1637, the Dutch West India Company captured the fort and significantly expanded it, holding it for over 200 years until it was ceded to the British in 1872. The architecture is a stark mix of luxury and brutality, featuring grand governors' quarters directly above cramped, dark dungeons where thousands of captives were held. The castle's strategic location and massive stone walls reflect the intense competition between European powers for control over the region's resources. Visiting
Elmina Castle is a historic fort on the coast of Ghana that is open to visitors as a museum. You can tour the interior with cells and trading rooms as well as the outer walls.

The castle is typically open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with tours on the hour. These hours may vary slightly depending on the season.
Photography
Photography is allowed in the courtyard and on the walls, but not inside the rooms out of respect for history. The view from the roof over the Atlantic is a worthwhile subject.
Time needed
Allow about one and a half to two hours for the guided tour and viewing the exhibits. If you also want to explore the nearby fishing town of Elmina, you will need extra time.
