Cape Coast Castle (Ghana)

Weather…

Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty slave castles, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa by European traders. Originally established as a small trading lodge by the Portuguese, it was transformed into a massive stone fortification by the Swedes in 1653 and named Fort Carolusburg. The castle changed hands multiple times, being contested by the Danes and the Dutch before the British finally captured it in 1664. For nearly 150 years, it served as the headquarters of the British colonial administration on the Gold Coast and was a primary hub for the transatlantic slave trade. Thousands of enslaved Africans were held in cramped, suffocating dungeons before being forced through the "Door of No Return" to ships bound for the Americas. Today, the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and serves as a powerful museum and memorial dedicated to the history of the slave trade and the resilience of the African diaspora.
