Saltpond is a historic coastal town in the Central Region of Ghana and the administrative center of the Mfantsiman Municipal District. The town gained worldwide fame as the birthplace of Ghana's modern political history, as both the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in 1947 and the Convention People's Party (CPP) in 1949 were founded here. Beyond its political significance, Saltpond was the site of Ghana's first oil discovery in 1970, leading to the establishment of the Saltpond Oil Field. The town's architecture still bears traces of the British colonial era, particularly in the old trading buildings near the seafront. The local economy is based on fishing, trade, and the oil industry, with the town also known for its salt production. Culturally, Saltpond is deeply rooted in Fante traditions, reflected in the annual Odambea festival. The town remains an important symbol of the Ghanaian independence struggle and a serene coastal settlement with a rich heritage.
