Werdau is located in the Saxon district of Zwickau, positioned along the Pleiße River at the foothills of the Western Ore Mountains. The town is historically significant for its rapid industrialization during the 19th century, initially dominated by textile mills and later by heavy vehicle manufacturing. It gained international fame as the home of the IFA truck plant, which produced iconic East German heavy vehicles like the G5 and H6. Werdau's most impressive architectural landmark is its town hall, an opulent building completed in 1911 in the Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance styles, often cited as one of the most beautiful in Saxony. In the post-industrial era, Werdau has reinvented itself as a diversified business location while leveraging its natural surroundings. The Werdau Forest (Werdauer Wald) to the west provides a vast recreational area for residents and tourists, offering a stark green contrast to its industrial past.
