Trausnitz Castle (Germany)

Weather…

Trausnitz Castle towers over the city of Landshut and served as the ancestral seat and residence of the Wittelsbach dukes from the 13th to the 16th century. Founded in 1204 by Duke Ludwig I, the complex was transformed over the centuries from a medieval fortress into a magnificent Renaissance palace. A particularly significant era occurred under Duke Wilhelm V, who commissioned Italian artists in the 16th century to decorate the interiors with grand murals. A unique art-historical feature is the so-called Fools' Stairs (Narrentreppe), which depicts life-sized scenes from the Commedia dell'arte. Despite a severe fire in 1961 that destroyed large parts of the princely wing's interior, the castle was meticulously restored to its former glory. Today, it houses the Chamber of Art and Curiosities, a branch of the Bavarian National Museum that documents the diverse collecting passions of Renaissance princes.
