Tittmoning is a historic town in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein, beautifully situated on the western bank of the River Salzach. For centuries, the town functioned as a strategic outpost of the Archbishopric of Salzburg until it was permanently ceded to Bavaria in 1816. The centerpiece of the old town is the expansive market square, built in the distinct Inn-Salzach architectural style. Its animated facades with decorative cornices and hidden roofs give the town an almost Mediterranean ambiance. Perched above the town is Tittmoning Castle, once a formidable fortress and a hunting lodge for the Salzburg archbishops. Today, the castle houses significant museums, including local heritage collections and sacred art. The surrounding area is defined by the pristine floodplains of the Salzach, offering extensive trails for hiking and cycling. The town's cultural identity remains deeply linked to its unique position on the historical border between Bavaria and Austria.
