Traunreut is a remarkable young city in the Chiemgau region of Upper Bavaria, distinct for its fascinating origins. Unlike the ancient medieval towns surrounding it, Traunreut was founded after World War II in 1950, growing out of a former munitions depot to provide a home for displaced persons and refugees from Eastern Europe. Today, it is the largest city in the Traunstein district and a bustling industrial hub. Its modern grid layout and mid-20th-century architecture provide a stark and interesting contrast to traditional Bavarian villages. Despite its industrial roots, art and culture have found a prominent place here, most notably at DasMaximum. This extraordinary contemporary art museum exhibits major works by international artists like Andy Warhol, Georg Baselitz, and Dan Flavin, housed in spacious, light-filled industrial halls. The city is also perfectly situated for nature exploration, positioned near the Traun river and just a short drive from the scenic Chiemsee, the Bavarian Sea, and the majestic Alps. The surrounding forests and riverside paths are popular for cycling and relaxing walks.
