Sulzbach-Rosenberg is a town of deep historical and industrial significance in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. It was formed in 1934 by merging the princely residence town of Sulzbach and the industrial hub of Rosenberg. For centuries, Sulzbach served as the capital of the Duchy of Palatinate-Sulzbach, and the grand Sulzbach Castle remains a dominant feature of the skyline. The town's location on the 'Golden Road', the medieval trade route between Nuremberg and Prague, brought it immense prosperity and cultural exchange. In contrast, Rosenberg’s identity was forged by the 'Maxhütte' steelworks, which was once the largest industrial employer in the region and a cornerstone of the Bavarian steel industry until its closure. Today, the town is a center for education, notably hosting the Bavarian Police Training Institute. It has successfully diversified its economy into high-tech manufacturing and services. Cultural highlights include the Literature Days and the historic City Wall Festival. Visitors are drawn to its medieval old town, the impressive castle museum, and the nearby natural wonders of the Upper Palatinate Jura, known for its limestone caves and hiking trails.
