Hirschau is located in the heart of the Upper Palatinate and is inextricably linked to the industrial history of kaolin mining. The town developed through the extraction of white clay, which is primarily used in porcelain manufacturing worldwide. Its most striking landmark is Monte Kaolino, a hill over 120 meters high made of the finest quartz sand, which was created as a byproduct of the kaolin extraction process. Today, this hill serves as a unique leisure center where visitors can go skiing or sandboarding in the middle of summer. Hirschau's historical old town, with its Gothic town hall and Baroque townhouses, has a welcoming contrast to the industrial surroundings. The town is also an important hub for hikers and cyclists exploring the Upper Palatinate Forest. The local economy is still significantly shaped by the kaolin works, which remain one of the region's largest employers and a key player in the global minerals market.
