Mutso is a spectacular fortress village in the remote Khevsureti region, perched on a rugged rocky ridge above the Andaki River. The site, which flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries, consists of about 30 fortified residential towers and sacral structures arranged in terraces on the slope. Due to its strategic location, Mutso served for centuries as Georgia's northern bastion against invasions from the North Caucasus. During the 19th century, the village was almost completely abandoned due to extreme living conditions and epidemics. In recent years, Mutso was saved from decay by a large-scale state restoration project (2014-2019), for which it was awarded the Europa Nostra Prize. The architecture is characterized by the use of dry-stone masonry made of slate, giving the buildings a defensive and timeless appearance.

There are no official opening hours for this remote historical site. However, a visit is highly recommended during daylight hours only, as the uneven terrain and steep paths can be quite dangerous in the dark.

The steep rocky ridges and medieval architecture provide truly dramatic photographic subjects. Early morning or late afternoon light creates especially remarkable and atmospheric shots of the ancient ruins.
Time needed
You should plan for at least two to three hours to explore the scattered ruins and tackle the steep ascents. Those who want to soak in the views longer can easily spend half a day in this unique environment.

Getting there
Getting to this remote mountain region usually requires a sturdy four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle. The unpaved roads are often very bumpy and can become quite difficult to navigate after heavy rainfall.
Insider tip
Be sure to wear sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots, as the paths can be extremely uneven and slippery. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as there is typically no tourist infrastructure available on site.
