Ananuri Fortress (Georgia)

Weather…

Ananuri Fortress is a striking architectural ensemble located along the Aragvi River, situated on the Georgian Military Highway. Dating back to the 17th century, the complex served as the seat of the Eristavis (Dukes) of Aragvi, a powerful feudal dynasty that ruled the region. The fortress consists of two distinct fortifications joined together: the upper fortress, which remains remarkably well-preserved with its walls and towers, and the lower fortress, which is now largely in ruins. Within the complex stand two churches, the most prominent being the Church of the Assumption, built in 1689. This church is celebrated for its elaborate facade carvings, featuring religious iconography and mythical creatures, as well as its surviving internal frescoes. Throughout its history, Ananuri was the site of numerous violent feuds between rival noble houses. Today, its pretty location overlooking the turquoise waters of the Zhinvali Reservoir makes it one of Georgia's most photographed historical landmarks.
