Offoué River Valley (Gabon)

Weather…

The Offoué River Valley is an ecologically and historically significant region in central Gabon, named after the Offoué River, a major tributary of the Ogooué. The landscape is characterized by a fascinating mosaic of gallery forests and ancient grass savannas, representing a relict form of vegetation from the last ice age. These savannas are of particular interest to science as they show how Central African flora has changed over millennia. The valley directly borders the Lopé National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and serves as an important habitat for mandrills, which gather here in groups of several hundred animals. Archaeological excavations in the Offoué Valley have brought to light numerous finds from the Iron Age, including smelting furnaces proving that metallurgy was practiced here over 2,000 years ago. The valley was historically an important migration route for Bantu peoples on their way south. Today, the area is used for ecological tourism and scientific research, with the preservation of the unique savanna-forest boundary at the forefront.
