Mount Iboundji
Weather…
Water temperature…
Mount Iboundji, reaching an elevation of approximately 1,575 meters, is the highest peak in Gabon and a prominent feature of the Chaillu Massif in the central part of the country. The summit is frequently shrouded in mist, creating a unique montane rainforest environment characterized by high humidity and cooler temperatures compared to the lowlands. Geologically, the mountain is composed of ancient Precambrian rocks that have been shaped by erosion over millions of years. The slopes of Iboundji harbor exceptional biodiversity, including rare orchids and endemic plant species adapted to high-altitude conditions. Despite its scientific significance, the mountain remains difficult to access due to the dense forest cover and lack of developed infrastructure. In local traditions, the peak often holds spiritual importance, sometimes regarded as a sacred site or the dwelling place of ancestral spirits. Protecting this ecosystem is vital for maintaining the health of the watersheds that feed the surrounding river systems.
