Cassava root is the standard side dish of the region, available with almost every traditional meal.
A very local specialty, however, make sure to clarify the source and species before consuming.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The best (and often only) option for basic supplies and provisions before excursions.
Occasionally sold by artisans in the region; a beautiful reminder of local art.
The starting point for peaceful nature trails right on the town border, good for short hikes.

Iboundji is a remote settlement in the Ogooué-Lolo Province of central Gabon, best known for its proximity to the mountain massif that shares its name. Mount Iboundji was long cited as the highest point in Gabon, with an elevation of 1,575 meters, although modern surveys often favor Mount Bengoué for this title. The region is defined by its rugged topography and dense primary rainforest, which significantly hinders transportation and large-scale agricultural activity. Iboundji functions as a district administrative center, yet it remains largely isolated from the national infrastructure due to the poor condition of local roads. The local inhabitants belong to ethnic groups that traditionally sustain themselves through hunting, gathering, and shifting cultivation. Recently, the area has gained interest from ecological researchers, as the isolated highlands host unique microclimates and rare botanical species. While ecotourism holds potential for the region's future, its development is currently constrained by a lack of facilities and the logistical complexities of accessing such a secluded highland area.
