The Iguela Game Reserve, now part of Loango National Park, is world-famous for its unique location where the African rainforest directly meets the Atlantic Ocean. This area is one of the few places in the world where one can see hippos swimming in the ocean surf or elephants wandering along the sandy beaches. The reserve encompasses lagoons, mangroves, and dense forests that host exceptional biodiversity. In addition to the iconic 'surfing' hippos, Iguela provides habitat for humpback whales, which can be spotted offshore during the migration season. The region plays a central role in Gabon's ecotourism model, which focuses on protecting pristine wilderness. The dry season from June to September features the best chances to see elephants and hippos on the beach and in the lagoons. During the rainy season the animals are still present but access roads become challenging.

Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are prime times when animals come to the shore to drink and graze. At midday they typically retreat to shade or remain in the water to cool off.

Etiquette
Keep a minimum of 50 meters from elephants and hippos, as they can be unpredictable and dangerous. Do not feed the animals and move slowly and quietly to avoid startling them.

What to bring
Binoculars are essential to observe the animals from a safe distance. Sturdy hiking shoes, insect repellent, and plenty of water are important due to the coastal environment.

Getting there
The reserve is located along Gabon’s coast and is best reached with a 4x4 vehicle. A dirt track from the nearest town, Gamba, leads into the park.
