Mbigou is a fascinating mountain town in the Ngounié province of southern Gabon, known worldwide for its unique craftsmanship. Situated in the foothills of the Birougou Mountains, the town is characterized by a cooler highland climate that distinguishes it from the humid lowlands. Historically, Mbigou is famous for the mining and processing of 'Mbigou stone' (a soft soapstone), from which local artists create detailed sculptures considered national cultural treasures of Gabon. The local economy is driven by art as well as agriculture, particularly the cultivation of coffee and vegetables, which thrive in the fertile volcanic soil. Geographically, the town is located near Birougou National Park, an important sanctuary for primates and forest elephants. Mbigou's architecture is defined by simple brick buildings and the surrounding hilly landscape. The town serves as the administrative center for the Boumi-Louetsi department and proudly preserves the traditions of the Nzebi culture, which is deeply rooted in the region.
