The town is located within the Du Chaillu Massif at an elevation of over 500 meters, making it one of the highest settlements in the country. During the colonial era, Mimongo was a thriving center for coffee and cocoa cultivation, with old plantations still dotting the surrounding landscape. Geographically, it is significant for its proximity to Mont Iboundji, which at 1575 meters is considered one of Gabon's highest peaks. Economically, the town now relies on forestry and local agricultural trade, though it faces challenges due to limited accessibility caused by the mountainous terrain. Despite these hurdles, Mimongo remains an important cultural hub for the Mitsogo people, who are known for their deep-rooted traditions and spiritual ceremonies.
