Soyuz Launch Facility (ELS) (French Guiana)

Weather…

The ELS (Ensemble de Lancement Soyouz) launch facility is a unique part of the Guiana Space Centre, specifically built for the Russian Soyuz rocket in the commune of Sinnamary. Cooperation between ESA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos allowed the legendary Soyuz to be launched from a near-equatorial site, significantly increasing its payload capacity for geostationary orbits. The complex was modeled after Soyuz pads in Baikonur but enhanced with a 52-meter-tall mobile service tower to meet European safety standards and protect the rocket from tropical rainfall. The first launch took place in October 2011, carrying two Galileo navigation satellites. Following the suspension of cooperation in 2022 due to geopolitical tensions, operations at the facility are currently halted. ELS remains a significant testament to international space cooperation and one of the most technologically advanced Soyuz launch sites in the world.
