Ariane 5 Launch Pad (ELA-3) (French Guiana)

Weather…

The ELA-3 (Ensemble de Lancement Ariane 3) launch pad was the heart of European spaceflight in Kourou for over two decades. Despite its name, it was primarily used for the heavy-lift Ariane 5 rocket, which launched from here 117 times between 1996 and 2023. The complex includes a massive launch table connected to assembly buildings via a rail system, as well as extensive cryogenic fuel storage for liquid hydrogen and oxygen. ELA-3 was notable for its ability to support dual launches, carrying two large satellites into orbit simultaneously. With the final flight of Ariane 5 in July 2023, an era came to an end for this site. The facility is now being prepared for future roles or stands as a technical monument to the success of the Ariane program, which ensured Europe's independent access to space.
