Avignon, located in the heart of Provence on the banks of the Rhône River, is a city of extraordinary historical and cultural stature. It gained worldwide fame in the 14th century when it served as the seat of the papacy for nearly seven decades, earning it the enduring nickname 'City of the Popes.' The monumental Palais des Papes, the world's largest Gothic palace, together with the Notre-Dame des Doms cathedral and the iconic Saint-Bénézet bridge, stand as witnesses to this golden era and are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The old town remains enclosed by over four kilometers of intact city walls, among the best-preserved fortifications in Europe. Today, Avignon is internationally recognized for its annual theater festival, founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, which transforms the city into a vast open-air stage every summer. The surrounding region is also famous for its exceptional wines, notably from the nearby Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards. The city harmoniously blends its medieval heritage with a lively modern atmosphere and unmistakable Provençal flair. Its elegant mansions, shaded plazas, and bustling culinary scene make Avignon a premier cultural destination in southern France, where history is celebrated alongside contemporary artistic expression.
