Marseille is the second-largest city in France and the nation's most significant Mediterranean port. It was founded around 600 BC by Greek sailors from Phocaea as Massalia, making it the oldest city in France. The heart of the city is the Old Port (Vieux-Port), which has been in continuous use since antiquity and now serves as a bustling center for tourism and local fishing. Overlooking the city is the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, topped by a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, traditionally revered as the protector of sailors. The historic Le Panier district, with its narrow streets and colorful facades, reflects the city's ancient origins and its enduring multicultural character. In the 19th century, Marseille experienced a massive economic boom following the opening of the Suez Canal, positioning it as a primary gateway to the Orient. Today, the city is a major hub for maritime trade, scientific research, and culture, highlighted by modern developments such as the MuCEM museum. The surrounding natural landscape, especially the spectacular limestone Calanques, makes Marseille a premier destination for nature lovers. Marseille hosted the sailing events of the Paris 2024 Olympics at its marina, showcasing the Mediterranean coastline. The Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica underwent renovation works.
