Arles is a city of immense historical and artistic depth located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Situated at the apex of the Rhône delta, it serves as the cultural capital of the Camargue region. The city’s history reached its zenith during the Roman Empire, especially under Emperor Constantine, when it was a favored imperial residence. The Roman arena, remarkably preserved, stands as a testament to this power, seating over 20,000 spectators for ancient gladiatorial games. In the Middle Ages, Arles flourished as a spiritual hub; the Church of Saint-Trophime remains a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. The city's light and lively colors famously captivated Vincent van Gogh, who painted iconic works like 'Starry Night Over the Rhône' here. Today, Arles is a dynamic center for contemporary culture, hosting the world-renowned 'Rencontres d'Arles' photography festival. The skyline has been recently transformed by the LUMA Arles tower, a shimmering Frank Gehry creation that anchors a major creative campus. The city successfully blends its 2,000-year-old heritage with a bold commitment to modern art and environmental conservation.
