Figeac, located in the Lot department, is an architecturally intact medieval town positioned in the Célé valley. As the birthplace of Jean-François Champollion, the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphs, the town has created a unique monument to the art of writing. The Musée Champollion, housed in the scholar's birthplace, is dedicated to the worldwide history of writing and global languages. Just around the corner is the Place des Écritures, a small square whose ground is completely covered by a gigantic black granite replica of the Rosetta Stone, a truly spectacular sight. But Figeac is not only fascinating for its Egyptology connections. The excellently preserved old town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets lined with magnificent 13th- and 14th-century merchant houses. Their characteristic sandstone facades and the open attics (solelhos), once used for drying goods, bear witness to the town's wealth in the Middle Ages. Every Saturday morning, a lively market takes place, offering regional specialties such as Quercy saffron, walnut oil, and the famous Rocamadour goat cheese. Figeac is a magical blend of history, culture, and rich regional gastronomy.
