Caylus is a scenic medieval village located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, positioned on the slopes of the Bonnette Valley. The settlement is overlooked by the majestic ruins of a 12th-century castle that once played a vital strategic role in the Quercy region. During the Albigensian Crusade, Caylus was a contested outpost, frequently changing hands between the Counts of Toulouse and the French monarchy. The village is renowned for its well-preserved 14th and 15th-century architecture, most notably the House of the Wolf (Maison du Loup), famous for its distinctive exterior sculptures. Another cultural highlight is the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, which houses a monumental wooden crucifix carved by the world-renowned 20th-century sculptor Ossip Zadkine. The narrow, winding streets and the central market square with its medieval arcades transport visitors back to a bygone era. Today, Caylus is an animated community of artists and craftsmen, set against a rugged limestone landscape that has numerous opportunities for exploration.
