Mauguio, historically known as Melgueil, is a fascinating town in the Occitanie region. In the Middle Ages, it was one of the region's most significant powers and the seat of the influential Counts of Melgueil, who even minted their own currency. Geographically, Mauguio is situated on a fertile plain bordering the Étang de l'Or, an extensive lagoon renowned for its flora and fauna. A large portion of Mauguio's territory is now occupied by the Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport, making the town a strategic transportation hub. A striking feature of Mauguio is its strong cultural connection to Spain, established through 20th-century immigration. This is reflected in annual festivals, gastronomy, and passionate Camargue traditions. The town center is characterized by a medieval motte (castle hill) and narrow streets, while modern Mauguio serves as a dynamic residential area on the doorstep of Montpellier.
