Le Grau-du-Roi is a bustling seaside town in the Gard department, uniquely positioned as the gateway to the Camargue Regional Nature Park. The town's name stems from the 'grau', a natural breach in the dunes that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the inland lagoons. Originally a small fishing port, it has retained its authentic atmosphere with a bustling canal where fishing trawlers still dock daily. The town expanded significantly with the creation of Port-Camargue, now recognized as the largest marina in Europe and a pioneer in 'waterfront' urban planning. The geography of the area is remarkable, featuring the Pointe de l'Espiguette, a massive, protected dune system and lighthouse that gives miles of pristine sandy beaches. The town is deeply connected to Camargue culture, where white horses, black bulls, and pink flamingos are common sights. Local festivals often center around Camargue-style bullfighting, a non-lethal sport showcasing incredible athleticism. Visitors also flock to the Seaquarium, an impressive marine center dedicated to Mediterranean and tropical sea life. Le Grau-du-Roi has a well-suited blend of sun-drenched beaches, high-end sailing facilities, and deep-rooted regional traditions.
