Limoges is the world capital of porcelain and celebrates this heritage annually with ceramics markets and workshop visits, usually in spring and summer.
Limoges, the historic capital of the Limousin region situated on the banks of the Vienne River, is world-renowned for its exquisite porcelain and enamel artistry. Founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago as Augustoritum, it developed into a significant religious center during the Middle Ages. A major architectural highlight is the Saint-Étienne Cathedral, which began construction in the 13th century and took six centuries to complete. The butchers' quarter (Quartier de la Boucherie) preserves the city's medieval charm with its traditional timber-framed houses. In the 18th century, the discovery of local kaolin deposits revolutionized the economy, establishing Limoges as a premier center for porcelain manufacturing. Today, the city is also famous for the Gare des Bénédictins, often cited as one of the most beautiful railway stations in Europe. Limoges successfully bridges its industrial heritage with modern research in ceramics and high-tech materials, maintaining its global reputation as a center for both classical craftsmanship and modern industrial innovation in the French heartland.
