Angoulême, the capital of the Charente department, is perched on a rocky plateau high above the Charente River and is globally renowned as the 'City of Comics.' The historic ramparts offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and enclose the town center with its cobbled streets. The Saint-Pierre Cathedral is a Romanesque masterpiece, distinguished by its richly decorated facade featuring over 70 sculpted figures. Angoulême has a long tradition of papermaking, which began in the 16th century and significantly shaped the region's economic development. Since the 1970s, the town has established itself as a hub for the 'ninth art' through the International Comics Festival, a status reflected in the numerous murals throughout the cityscape. The city combines its rich historical heritage, including the town hall built on the ruins of a medieval castle, with a modern, creative energy. Angoulême is also a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
