Poitiers is a historic city in western France and the capital of the Vienne department. It is widely celebrated for its wealth of Romanesque architecture, particularly the Notre-Dame la Grande church, which features an exquisitely sculpted 12th-century facade. The city has been the site of several historically significant battles, including Charles Martel’s victory in 732 and a major conflict during the Hundred Years' War in 1356. Founded in 1431, the University of Poitiers is one of the oldest in Europe, contributing to the city's lively academic atmosphere. Another architectural landmark is the Palace of Justice, the former residence of the Dukes of Aquitaine, where Eleanor of Aquitaine once held court. Just a few kilometers to the north lies Futuroscope, a pioneering theme park dedicated to multimedia and cinematography. Due to its high concentration of religious buildings, Poitiers is often nicknamed the City of a Hundred Steeples.
