Vassy is a key historic settlement in the Calvados department, located in the rolling hills of the Bocage Virois. Since 2016, it has served as the administrative heart of the larger Valdallière commune. The town's heritage is deeply rooted in the medieval era, most notably through the Courval Templar Chapel, a 12th-century structure that stands as one of the few remaining vestiges of the Knights Templar in Normandy. Geographically, the area is defined by the 'bocage' landscape, a patchwork of fields enclosed by high hedges and stone walls, typical of the region's dairy farming heritage. Vassy remains a bustling rural hub, supporting a strong local economy based on cattle breeding, cheese production, and apple cultivation for cider. Its granite architecture and community-focused atmosphere make it a prime example of the enduring cultural identity of the Norman countryside.
