Flers is a key urban center in the Orne department of Normandy, situated within the scenic landscape of the Bocage Normand. The town's modern history was shaped by its rise as a leading textile hub during the Industrial Revolution, earning it a reputation for quality fabric production. Its crown jewel is the Château de Flers, a memorable 16th-century moated castle that reflects the grandeur of the local nobility; today, it serves as a museum and is surrounded by a vast landscaped park. Flers suffered extensive damage during the Allied bombings of 1944 but underwent a significant and thoughtful reconstruction in the post-war years. Currently, it is a bustling industrial and commercial hub, hosting major automotive and food processing companies. The town is also a gateway to the 'Suisse Normande' region, offering easy access to rugged hills and river valleys well-suited for hiking and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
