Saint-Lô is the prefecture of the Manche department in Normandy, historically built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Vire river. Originally known in Gallo-Roman times as Briovera, meaning 'Bridge over the Vire,' it grew into a formidable fortified city during the Middle Ages. The town's modern identity was forever altered in 1944 during the Battle of Normandy. As a strategic crossroads, it was subjected to intense Allied bombardment, which left 95% of the buildings in ruins, leading Nobel laureate Samuel Beckett to call it the 'Capital of Ruins.' The reconstruction process was a defining era for the city, resulting in a unique blend of mid-century architecture and surviving historic structures like the medieval ramparts. The Church of Notre-Dame remains a poignant symbol of this era, with its scarred facade preserved as a war memorial. Today, Saint-Lô is internationally recognized as the 'Horse Capital' of France, home to a prestigious National Stud (Haras National) and a thriving equestrian industry. It serves as a regional administrative and economic hub, particularly in the agri-food and digital sectors.
