Explore a magnificent 18th-century estate, fully decorated for the season with plenty of surprises for all visitors.
Situated in the Dives river basin, Mézidon-Canon is most celebrated for the exquisite Château de Canon, a privately owned 18th-century estate that remains remarkably intact. The real draw for visitors is the estate's spectacular gardens, classified as a 'Remarkable Garden' of France. These grounds feature the unique 'Chartreuses', a series of thirteen consecutive walled gardens originally designed for cultivating delicate fruit trees, now blooming with perennial flowers. Beyond the château, the town reflects a significant 19th-century railway heritage, as it developed into a major railway junction connecting Paris to the Norman coast. A walk through the town reveals specific railway workers' housing districts, built in a uniform brick style. Today, Mézidon-Canon provides an excellent starting point for exploring the broader Pays d'Auge, surrounded by pastures populated with grazing Norman cows and stud farms breeding elite racehorses.
