Étretat is perhaps the most iconic village on Normandy's Alabaster Coast. The monumental white chalk cliffs that frame the town are world-famous. Particularly striking are the three natural rock arches: Porte d'Amont, Porte d'Aval, and the massive Manneporte. Right next to the Porte d'Aval, the 70-meter-high rock needle "L'Aiguille" rises from the sea, serving as the central setting for Maurice Leblanc's detective novel "The Hollow Needle." The town itself has preserved the charm of an old seaside resort, with typical Norman half-timbered houses and an elegant promenade. Painters like Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet were so fascinated by the changing light on the white cliffs that they immortalized Étretat in numerous masterpieces. Today, well-maintained coastal paths atop the cliffs lead to sweeping viewpoints from which to watch the play of the tides.
