Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse is a prominent town in Lower Normandy, situated in the heart of the fertile Caen plain. Its name, which translates to 'Proud Bretteville', is thought to reflect either the height of its church spire or the historical prosperity of its landowners. The town gained international historical significance during the Battle of Normandy in June 1944. Positioned on the main road between Caen and Bayeux, it was a vital objective for Allied forces. The town was the site of intense fighting between Canadian regiments and German panzer divisions, eventually leading to its liberation and providing a springboard for the capture of Caen. Today, it is the primary administrative center of the Thue et Mue commune. Bretteville maintains a strong agricultural identity, with the surrounding landscape dominated by grain and flax fields, which have been the backbone of the local economy for centuries. The town has seen significant residential development due to its proximity to Caen, offering a high quality of life with modern schools and sports facilities. Visitors often come to see the Church of Saint-Germain and the various war memorials that pepper the landscape, honoring those who fought in the 1944 campaign.
