Located in the Moselle department very close to the border with Luxembourg, Hettange-Grande has achieved worldwide recognition among geological scientists. The municipality is home to the 'Réserve naturelle nationale géologique de Hettange-Grande.' This protected site, located in a former quarry, officially gave its name to the 'Hettangian' geological stage (the very beginning of the Jurassic period, roughly 200 million years ago). By following a marked educational trail, visitors can examine the exposed sedimentary rock layers up close and look for the fossilized remains of ancient shells and plant imprints. Outside of this scientific landmark, Hettange-Grande functions as a typical Lorraine residential town. The old village center features the Saint-Étienne church, surrounded by sturdy farmhouses built from regional stone. The wooded topography heading toward the national borders is excellent for cycling and walking through deciduous forests, where hikers can occasionally spot old border stones. Its proximity to Luxembourg results in heavy commuter traffic and a cross-border lifestyle. Travelers interested in earth sciences will find Hettange-Grande to be one of Europe's most important geological reference points, set within a quiet, rural landscape.
