Pont-à-Mousson is a historical gem located in the heart of Lorraine, spanning the banks of the Moselle River halfway between Nancy and Metz. The town is highly celebrated for its rich architectural heritage, highlighted by the extraordinary Place Duroc. This striking triangular market square, unique in France, is lined with elegant Renaissance arcades and grand burgher houses, making it a well-suited spot to sit at a café and absorb the local atmosphere. Looming over the town is the Butte de Mousson, a steep hill crowned with the ruins of an ancient castle; a short hike to the top rewards you with panoramic panoramic views over the Moselle valley. Another must-see is the 18th-century Premonstratensian Abbey (Abbaye des Prémontrés), a magnificent masterpiece of classical architecture featuring beautiful gardens that gently slope down to the river. Interestingly, the town is also world-renowned for its heavy industry, particularly the manufacture of cast-iron manhole covers found in cities across the globe. Food enthusiasts should not miss the chance to visit the local patisseries to savor traditional Lorraine treats, including delicate madeleines and regional macarons.
