Saint-Avold is a historic city in the Moselle department of northeastern France, situated near the German border in the heart of the Lorraine region. Its origins date back to the 6th century with the founding of a Benedictine abbey by Saint Nabor, a religious heritage that remains visible in the grand Abbey Church of Saint-Nabor. The city is home to the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, which is the largest American military cemetery of World War II in Europe, containing the graves of over 10,000 service members. Economically, Saint-Avold was for decades a cornerstone of the European coal and chemical industries, and the nearby Carling-Saint-Avold chemical platform remains a vital industrial hub today. Surrounded by the ancient Warndt forest, the town provides a high quality of life with ample opportunities for outdoor recreation and nature exploration. The local culture is a unique blend of French and Germanic influences, reflected in its traditions, gastronomy, and the bilingual heritage of many of its inhabitants. It serves as an important regional center, balancing its heavy industrial past with a commitment to modern services and historical preservation.
