Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is situated in a wide basin of the Vosges Mountains and proudly holds the title of the 'Godmother of America.' The town achieved worldwide historical significance in 1507 when cartographer Martin Waldseemüller printed the first map here that labeled the newly discovered continent as 'America.' A modern highlight in the city center is the Tour de la Liberté, a striking white tent-like structure originally designed for the bicentennial of the French Revolution, which now houses a valuable jewelry collection. Just next door stands the massive red sandstone cathedral, connected to the neighboring Notre-Dame de Galilée church by a beautiful Romanesque cloister. The urban layout was heavily influenced by post-World War II reconstruction, resulting in wide, highly functional avenues. Saint-Dié is surrounded by deep coniferous forests and steep mountain slopes, attracting hikers, rock climbers, and mountain bikers throughout the year. Every autumn, the town hosts the renowned International Festival of Geography, drawing scholars and travelers from around the globe. Local bakeries tempt visitors with traditional blueberry tarts, a sweet regional specialty that provides the first-rate reward after a long mountain trek.
