Hombourg-Haut is a historic town in the Moselle department of northeastern France, uniquely characterized by its dual identity as a medieval stronghold and a former mining center. The upper town, known as Vieux-Hombourg, sits atop a sandstone cliff and is dominated by the majestic Saint-Étienne collegiate church, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Lorraine. Founded by the Bishops of Metz in the 13th century, the town served as a vital defensive post. The lower part of the town developed later, fueled by the Lorraine coal boom and the steel industry, which brought rapid growth and a multicultural population. Today, Hombourg-Haut is a hub of cultural activity, particularly famous for the Théodore Gouvy International Festival, named after the 19th-century composer who lived here. The town is surrounded by the lush forests of the Warndt region, offering beautiful natural scenery and outdoor recreation. Since the decline of the mining industry, it has successfully pivoted towards cultural tourism and cross-border economic integration with neighboring Germany, maintaining a high quality of life with its floral displays and well-kept public spaces.
