Rethel is a resilient town in the Ardennes department, strategically positioned on the Aisne river and the Canal des Ardennes. Its history is deeply rooted in the Duchy of Rethel, which played a significant role in French noble history, once owned by Cardinal Mazarin’s family. The town's location has historically placed it in the path of many invasions, leading to catastrophic damage during both World Wars; specifically in 1940, it was nearly leveled by intense shelling. Despite this, Rethel was rebuilt into a thriving regional hub, while preserving its most precious landmark, the Saint-Nicolas Church, unique for its double nave. Globally, the town is celebrated as the capital of 'Boudin Blanc de Rethel', a high-quality white sausage that has enjoyed protected status since 2001. This culinary specialty is celebrated annually at a dedicated fair. Today, Rethel serves as a vital economic link in the Grand Est region, with a strong focus on agriculture and logistics, benefiting from its position on the high-speed rail line and major motorways connecting France to Northern Europe.
