Located in the Doubs department, Sochaux is synonymous with French industrial history and stands proudly as the historic home of the Peugeot automobile brand. In the early 20th century, the Peugeot family transformed this small village into a massive, pioneering industrial complex. The absolute highlight for visitors is the Musée de l'Aventure Peugeot, which houses a spectacular collection of historic vehicles, concept cars, bicycles, and even the company's early coffee mills. This museum meticulously documents over two centuries of technological innovation and engineering prowess. Beyond automobiles, the town is deeply connected to its football club, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, founded in 1928 by Jean-Pierre Peugeot, playing its matches at the Auguste-Bonal stadium. The urban landscape is largely defined by its 20th-century industrial architecture and historic workers' housing estates. Despite its manufacturing focus, the Allan river and local green spaces soften the town's robust industrial character.
