💡 Tips
- The water is alpine and cold even in summer. Be prepared for a refreshing shock if you go for a swim.
- Visit the Saint-Michel Chapel. This small chapel stands on an island and was once the church of a village now at the bottom of the lake.
- The weather in the Alps can change quickly. Bring an extra layer of clothing even on a sunny day.
- The road around the lake (almost 120 km) is beautiful but winding. Plan enough time to enjoy the viewpoints.
- At the Muséoscope du Lac near the dam, you can discover the dramatic history of the flooded villages and the dam's construction.
🍽 Food
These fried dough fritters are a local specialty. Try both the savory version (with potatoes or cheese) and the sweet one (with apple or prune).
Small pasta squares filled with cheese and herbs. You can find them in restaurants around the lake, often served with a simple sage butter.
A strong herbal liqueur from the Alps. A great digestif after a hearty meal. Look for artisanal brands.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
This large market takes place on Saturday mornings and features an abundance of local products, from Alpine honey to mountain cheese.
The diversity of Alpine flowers results in a particularly aromatic honey. Look for local beekeepers at markets or farm shops.
Rent a small boat or kayak to discover secluded coves that are inaccessible from land. Pack a picnic and enjoy the silence.
Near the lake, you'll find these peculiar rock formations (hoodoos). A short walk takes you to a quiet spot with an interesting geological story.
This ancient fir forest is home to a beautiful 12th-century abbey. The marked trails offer a peaceful escape from the busy beaches.
Water temperature…
Lac de Serre-Ponçon was created in the 1950s following the construction of a massive earth dam across the Durance river to manage water resources for Provence and generate hydroelectricity. Covering 28 square kilometers, it is now one of the largest reservoirs in Western Europe and a major tourism hub in the Southern Alps. Its lively turquoise color is caused by rock flour from Alpine rivers, creating a spectacular sight against the rugged Écrins massif. The lake is a premier location for water-based activities, benefiting from reliable thermal winds that attract sailors, windsurfers, and kitesurfers. Numerous managed beaches and secluded coves offer excellent swimming conditions. A symbolic landmark is the Saint-Michel Chapel, perched on a tiny island; it was the only building spared when the valley was flooded because it stood on a high hill. The Muséoscope du Lac in Savines-le-Lac provides a fascinating look into the dam's engineering and the displacement of local communities. Surrounding the lake are various geological wonders, including the 'Demoiselles Coiffées' (hoodoos) near Pontis. The region enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, making it a first-rate destination for hiking and mountain biking from late spring through autumn. Panoramic roads circling the lake offer multiple viewpoints and access to local villages where Alpine trout and cheeses are staples of the local diet. Access is primarily through the towns of Gap or Briançon.
