Sisteron stands as one of the most visited small towns in Southern France, primarily due to its extraordinary geographical setting. The town clings to the base of the Rocher de la Baume, an impressive geological formation characterized by vertical limestone strata. Perched above the old quarter is the Citadel, a strategic monument that historically controlled the vital passage between Provence and the Alps. Napoleon Bonaparte famously passed through here in 1815 upon his return from Elba, marking Sisteron as a pivotal stop on the 'Route Napoléon'. The local economy is bolstered by tourism and agriculture, specifically the breeding of 'Agneau de Sisteron' (lamb), which is highly regarded for its tender quality. The narrow, winding alleys of the old town, known as 'Andrônes', feature vaulted passages that preserve a deep medieval ambiance. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean, yet tempered by Alpine influences, providing the area with remarkably clear air and brilliant light.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
